As commercial property owners ourselves, we understand commercial design – and the ways design impacts return on investment. In fact, thanks to our ownership of the Wickwood Inn, we walk in our commercial clients’ shoes every day.
We know that beauty alone isn’t enough. Practicality, longevity, broad appeal, and a spirit of welcome – not to mention meeting both cost and schedule! – are key. Perhaps most important is having a story to tell – a design tale that distinguishes one property from another, and helps customers, renters, and guests make a choice.
The Wickwood Inn is our daily laboratory for doing just that. Sure, it’s an enchanting place for romantic getaways. Family reunions. Even business retreats. Design-forward and offering a luxury hospitality experience unlike any other along Michigan’s Art Coast, the Wickwood also acts as a testing ground as we play with different ways to meet the varied needs of our SH Studio clientele. What level of luxury will customers and guests be willing to pay for? How easy is it for them to recognize and appreciate the differences good design might present between our inn and their homes, and how important is that to them? Are they inspired enough by their surroundings to want to recreate them at home? Are they moved to inquire about product, pampered beyond their wildest dreams thanks to that product (Vispring mattresses, we’re looking at you!), and longing to return even before they’ve left? If the answers to those questions are yes, then we know we’ve done our job. And we’ll take the lessons we’ve learned and apply them to our client work.
Winter offers unique opportunities to test our theories. As the temperature dips, the wind whips, and snowflakes fall, our guests are as likely to relax in front of our warming fireplace (hot tea and book in hand; loved one alongside; private massage awaiting) as they are to head out for a nearby cross-country skiing adventure. Either way, we’ve designed the inn to enhance both our guests’ enjoyment, and our own ROI.
