How To Design Spaces to Showcase Art
While there may be a natural inclination to believe that art is an afterthought when designing interiors, we believe that art should be considered at the beginning of the process. For our clients’ elegant secondary home in Jackson Hole, we had an impressive art collection from the get-go, including pieces from Roy Lichtenstein and Richard Serra. Our goal was to showcase the clients’ art in a gallery-like space while highlighting the home’s stunning
scenery.
Creating beauty is one thing; running a business is another. That’s why we like to say we’re as much about the beauty of design as the business of design. In our minds – and to our clients’ benefit – they’re equally important. You can read more about our approach to design, and the way we run Soucie Horner, here.

Shea and Martin discuss how collecting art is a personal, lifelong journey.
Using Wolf Point East as a case study, Shea and Martin provide an educational segment on creating impact in a commercial space within an allocated budget.
Recently, we sat with our Senior Designer Alexis Ward and discussed her participation with A Better Chicago’s Impact Council.
Soucie Horner: What is A Better Chicago’s Impact Council?
Alexis: The Impact Council is a community of next-generation entrepreneurial leaders implementing A Better Chicago’s mission to change how Chicago fights poverty by investing in bold ideas that create opportunity for our youth.
How to Select Artwork for Commercial Spaces?
Considering art at the start of the process is important for both residential and commercial interiors. The critical difference, however, is selecting artwork that shares the same story and vision of the project while fitting within a particular budget. While residential projects may begin with a client’s personal collection, a commercial project starts from scratch. Shea: Holiday Decorating at Home
For Shea, simplicity and elegance are paramount for holiday decorating. With this in mind, Shea and her family dress the tree with twinkling white lights, silver metallic ornaments and treasured paper sculptures by artist Betsy Birkey. Timeless and inviting, the rest of Shea’s home is adorned with traditional evergreen garlands along the banister and the mantel of the fireplace.
Martin: Gathering at a Table
From his early years as a young graduate student in Paris to the present day, Martin has always loved the art of entertaining. With an adamant belief that a table can be beautifully (and ornately) set without being fussy, Martin brings out his finest plates and flatware and crystal on both formal and informal occasions. Whether it’s the first set of Mikasa fine china he purchased when he was in his 20’s or curating items from his go-to luxury tableware and décor boutique Kneen & Co., guests will always be welcomed with beauty, grace, and a spot at the table.
Our design team had quite a year. With 2021 almost behind us, we’re looking forward to the bevy of exciting projects in the year ahead. A scenic mountain house in Aspen fit for all four seasons, an elegant hospitality project in Bathurst to a historic renovation in Chelsea, to name a few, we’re ready for the new year!
