As we approach the holidays we take a moment to savor – and reflect upon – the many good and beautiful things our firm has been a part of in 2022. Here, we share highlights from the past few months – and send our most sincere wishes for the bounty of the season, the peace of quiet moments, and the bright hope of a new year.
– Shea & Martin
Renowned for delivering exceptionally curated content on international architecture, interiors, and design, Dezeen Magazine featured our long-time, Chicago-based clients’ Jackson Hole get-away. With a breathtaking walk-through from the outside in, their story will transport you on a journey of design discovery to the American Mountain West, in true Soucie Horner style – without check-in hassles, flight delays or lost luggage. The Thrill of the Hunt: Shea Soucie’s Meaningful CollectionsIn a recent interview with Pagoda Red, Shea Soucie shared her personal collections of art and the joy of discovering treasures for her clients. As Shea states, “Almost any collection is interesting — there’s so much to learn about how and why things were created. Collections are one of the easiest, and most important, ways of personalizing space, whether a home or even an office.” Discover Shea’s beloved collections on Pagoda Red’s Journal The Red Book Stories. Tour a Worldly Manhattan ApartmentDesigner Aamir Khandwala brings his unique design perspective to each of his projects with a commitment to timelessness and individuality in mind. Serendipitously situated above Madison Square Park’s tree canopy, Khandwala’s latest project was designed to echo the client’s expansive travel history. Layering colors and textures was key to achieving this goal. Among these layers are SHIIR’s Holborn and Etson rugs, both customized by our skilled artisans, and both integral to Khandwala’s design. Described as a “design lover’s dream,”premiere lifestyle publication Hillgrove Avenue Magazine captured the essence of the Wickwood Inn in their fall issue. Providing a compact guide on what to do and where to go, you won’t need to look elsewhere to plan a quick romantic getaway to Michigan’s Art Coast… Design Inspiration Customizing: A Soucie Horner SpecialtyAt Soucie Horner, customizing is our specialty! Beyond fabric treatments and bespoke furniture pieces, we’re able to transcend the realm of traditional possibilities because of the expertise of our passionate, in-house design team. From one-of-a-kind murals to art-imprinted speaker fabric, our design studio is able to bring customized residential personalities and branded commercial identities to life. Viva Magenta! Each year we await the announcement of the Pantone Color Institute’s Color of the Year with curiosity. Will their selection herald an explosion in consumer goods, design, and fashion trends that incorporate the chosen color? On GratitudeAs we immerse ourselves in the season of gathering and giving, we want to slow down for a meaningful moment to express our gratitude. We are grateful every day for the talented professionals on our teams who help make our clients’ lives more beautiful, answer the needs of the designers who look to us for amazing rugs, and host our Wickwood Inn guests with unforgettable graciousness. Chicago Design Week Panel AppearancesShea and Martin both recently participated in panel discussions on topics important to the design industry. Shea lent her expertise on the business impacts of branding during Design Chicago, while Martin shared the stage with our fellow designer – and good friend – Jessica LaGrange at an Institute of Classical Art and Architecture event on modernizing historic properties. The Business of Design: DLN RomeMartin recently attended the Design Leadership Network’s (DLN) 2022 Design Leadership Summit in Rome, where he was energized and inspired by the Designing to Increase ROIWhen designing for commercial clients, our SH Studio team leverages two decades of luxury residential design experience to create exceptionally appointed environments in which to live, work, shop, and relax. Our strength is understanding a developer’s priorities, whether Wickwood Inn Hosts Group RetreatsWhen we established our Hospitality division a year ago with our purchase of the Wickwood Inn, it was our goal to create memorable, highly personalized experiences in a design-forward environment for our guests. And by guests, we didn’t just mean those enjoying weekend getaways. We were thinking bigger: Family reunions. Couples’ getaways. Wedding parties. Corporate and organizational retreats for business or pleasure – or both! That goal has been realized many times over in our first year, as organizations large and small have chosen the Wickwood Inn as their base from which to indulge in the many opportunities for food, fun, and recreation on Michigan’s Art Coast. Among them: Rockfon, and the Design Leadership Network (DLN). In fact, the DLN’s visit brought our vision to life: from workshops (and scrumptious breakfasts!) in our tech-outfitted dining room to after-hours sunset boat cruises and guided meditation classes, DLN members relaxed, recharged, and reconnected in just the way we’d hoped. Plein Air, Everywhere! Our recently launched Plein Air collection fulfilled a longtime dream – and a void in the marketplace. Comprised of uncommonly sophisticated hand-knotted rugs that are beautifully at ease both indoors and out, it distinguishes residential and commercial projects with wondrous colorations, complex patterns, and tactile extravagance. Think: exquisite hand embroidery. Finely hand-stitched pattern accents. Richly heathered solids. And satisfyingly hefty flat weaves. All hand-crafted of sustainably sourced PET fiber. All with the ability to resist the elements, fading, stains – and life. And all designed to invite layering with the rest of our rugs, whether within a room or throughout a home. Explore the collection to see why now more than ever, there’s a luxurious SHIIR rug perfectly suited to your every need – regardless of where you need it. Best SellersOur best-selling designs consistently capture the attention of the most discerning eyes. From wool and silk creations to foundational solids with subtle variations in hue, our range of best sellers is rich with choice. Celebrating Nest + Chicago Makers + HermesSupporting more than 250,000 artisans across 120+ countries, Nest bridges the maker and the market in a way that protects creatives and their work by creating sustainable, life-changing economic opportunities, while shining a light on their skills. Nest also works with like-minded industry leaders in design to help incorporate artisan production to their supply chains. As Nest advisors, we hosted Nest and Hermès for a beautiful and insightful evening of education and discovery about Nest’s Makers United Program. In addition to supporting international communities of makers, Makers United is dedicated to increasing diversity and inclusion with the US maker movement, an initiative particularly important to us as we strive to uplift and support creative entrepreneurs in Chicago. Third Floor Office Expansion As we enter our third decade and our business continues to prosper and grow, so does our need for office space! That’s why we’re happily spreading our wings to the third floor of our building at 208 W. Kinzie. With its open floor plan and plenty of natural light, the additional square footage gives us room for more workstations, expanded layout space for our designers to scheme, private meeting areas, and even a cozy lactation room for the new parents among us. Stay tuned for updates once we’ve transformed this former furniture showroom into a wonderful new place for our teams to do what they do best.
