With art hotspots like the Ark, Saugatuck has gained a national reputation for its abundance of amazing artists. With more than 30 local galleries and studios, the raves and accolades are well-deserved! Even with all of the attention, there are still some local treasures that don’t readily reach the spotlight. That’s why we want to make sure YOU know about the Ark. Marcia Perry’s Sculpture Studio (aka, The Ark) is easy to find and wonderful to explore. Just a bit off the beaten path, The Ark is just east of town on Blue Star Highway.  And, of course, it’s one of our favorites.

Rooted in, and emerging from, nature, Perry’s sculpture celebrates the richness, joy, and beauty of living. Her work expresses our profound and primal relationship to nature, offering metaphors for finding balance between the material and spiritual realms. This translates into a a sense of introspection and wonder when you meander through the studio and its surrounding grounds. Time spent at The Ark can be transformative. It’s as if healing happens and we are somehow able to access the deeper, authentic self.

“Between every two pine trees there is a door leading to a new way of life.”
~ John Muir

How is all of this possible?

We think the answer lies in Perry’s process. Perry describes her process as intuitive and explains that the trees lead her to where their secrets are revealed. She simply has to follow their guidance with gratitude.

The shapes, textures and patterns of nature compel me to make art. Through the living, breathing flesh and grain of downed trees, I pursue their exquisite truth, the stories found in the hearts of all things.”

Perry’s resulting sculptures are sometimes figurative, human or animal; and other times abstract. They all beg you to reach out and touch.

We wondered why downed trees and discarded wood was so inspirational for Perry.

“I hope that my efforts to reveal the wondrous spirits encased within chunks of discarded wood will inspire others to pay closer attention to the ever-present wisdom of nature and, especially, the immeasurable gifts and beauty of the trees. Life on earth depends upon the trees.”

For us, this message needs to be heard and understood more than ever.

“Of all man’s works of art, a cathedral is greatest. A vast and majestic tree is greater than that.”
~ Henry Ward Beecher
