“In a study, scientists report that drinking beer can be good for the liver.
I’m sorry, did I say “scientists”?
I meant, “Irish People’!”
~Tina Fey
“Everybody’s got to believe in something.
I believe I’ll have another beer.”
~WC Fields
We believe every good town has to have a good microbrewery. Saugatuck certainly does. Our little village is packed with sizzle, but when you reserve a stay at Wickwood Inn, you definitely won’t want to miss a trip to the local pub. Even better? The trip to the pub won’t take you long … it’s just a 5 minute drive from Wickwood.
Saugatuck Brewing Company (SBC) started with humble roots, great beer, and a big plan.
Beginning on June 23, 2005, a small, intimate, startup brewery was created in a leased industrial unit. The locals loved it. This was the perfect place to meet your friends and sip a freshly crafted beer. It was simple and delicious.
In 2008, SBC made a big move. Well, actually, they moved just across the street, but now Saugatuck Brewing would have 25,000 square feet of space complete with a fully remodeled Lucky Stone Pub.
Multiple expansions later, SBC now utilizes a state of the art 45 barrel brew system which is paired with 960 barrels of fermentation space. The full service kitchen (where just about everything is made in house!) means the Saugatuck Brewing Company menu is full of delicious entrees (try the Pretzel Crusted Walleye or the hearty Shrimp Macaroni & Cheese), sandwiches (Crispy Shrimp Po’ Boy or the Stout Braised Portabella Mushroom Sandwich) soups (Roasted Poblano Corn Bisque or Soup du Jour), salads (we like the Grilled Steak & Artichoke or the Fruit & Nut), appetizers (why not start with Cashew Crusted Brie, Cuban Bruschetta, and the Roasted Brussels Sprouts) and desserts (we rarely pass up the Black & Tan Brownie or the Pumpkin Stout Cake!)
The pub now features 15 beers on tap in the pub along with an impressive selection of cans and bottles that are packaged for distribution in 11 states and 6 different countries! The Brewery also houses a large banquet facility known as The Singapore Room. This room is perfect for Food & Beer Pairing Dinners, Corporate Parties, Wedding Rehearsal Dinners, Birthday Parties, Family Gathers and much more. Featuring a full bar with 4 taps, a variety of wine and customizable menu available.
Saugatuck Brewing Company’s beers cover an impressive range of styles and flavor profiles. Ranging from the classic Oval Beach Blonde (pair this with the Blackened Salmon Salad or alongside some Monterey Jack Cheese), to the robust Bonfire Brown (Gold Medal for American Brown Ale 2014 – World Beer Cup Best in Show 2013 … delicious with smoked sausages and aged gouda, or any other hearty foods), the hop-forward session Backyard IPA (A refreshing IPA, and at just 4.5% ABV it’s the perfect beer when you still have things on your want-to-do- list), or the bold and unique Blueberry Maple Stout (a sweet milk stout with all the malt characteristics you love but with a bold, unique twist … beer & pancakes, anyone?)
In addition to crafting their own beers, Saugatuck Brewing is proud to be the only Microbrewery in the state of Michigan to feature a Brew On Premise System. That means you can have your very own brew (complete with custom label!) for your wedding, 4th of July party, backyard BBQ, 50th birthday, or any other celebratory event. Making a custom batch of brew is perfect for groups, couples, families, and businesses. SBC provides the recipes, natural ingredients, professional brewing equipment and the expertise to guide you through the process. It takes approximately 4 hours to brew your batch. Return in 2-3 weeks to bottle and sample your beer. We promise. You’ll have loads of fun, learn a lot, and walk away with a craft beer you can be especially proud of.
The same small brewing system also allows SBC to brew very small batches of experimental beers that they can then feature on tap in the pub. We love a visit to the pub, because you never know what incredibly diverse line-up of limited release beers may be featured that day. The Cottonmouth Quencher on tap now is a Kettle Sour that’s tart and funky with some nice cherry notes … dangerously drinkable for a beer that’s 8.25% ABV.
Brewing on site is just one the many special events happening at SBC. There are brewery tours, live music, dancing, team bingo, putts and pints (yes, that’s right … the Singapore Room becomes a “putting ground” for disc golfers), special beer dinners, and so much more. There’s more to do than you can imagine in Saugatuck.
Year round … it’s the perfect place to escape from it all.
