Inspired by the Labor Day bridge walk across the Mackinac Bridge that began in 1958, the citizens of Saugatuck & Douglas decided to start a tradition of their own. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Blue Star Bridge walk from Douglas to Saugatuck.
Time to get your walking shoes ready!
Participation in the Mackinac Bridge walk takes some commitment. The walk is 5 miles long, and the crowds swell beyond 50,000 people.
As for the Blue Star Bridge walk?
Well, let’s just say the folks in Saugatuck & Douglas like to keep life a bit simpler … and a lot more fun.
“I am going to keep having fun every day I have left, because there is no other way of life. You just have to decide whether you are a Tigger or an Eeyore.”
~ Randy Pausch
Here’s everything you need to know:
What? 20th Annual Labor Day Bridge Walk.
When? Monday, September 3. at 9:00 a.m. The Town Crier (who may be surrounded by bagpipers?) will lead the way starting at 9:30 a.m.
Where? Line up on the Douglas side of the bridge and loosen up for the casual .12 mile long stroll. Dogs, strollers, costumes, musical instruments, and signs? Optional. Sense of humor? Required.
Why? Because Judy Anthrop and Bud Baty decided in 1999 that it would be fun to have our own version of a bridge walk. As usual, Judy and Bud were correct. It IS fun having our own festive stroll from village to village!
Concerned you may need a break during this oh-so-strenuous crossing? Don’t worry! There will be volunteers cheering you on and offering you hydration at the half way point. Yep, that’s correct. .06 miles in, and we are encouraged to take a break from all the strain. Whew, thank goodness!
Of course, when you reserve a guest room or suite at Wickwood Inn, there will lots more food and beverages to nourish you throughout your stay. Our signature Farm To Table Brunch sets the tone for a fantastic day, and our evening Sips & Small Plates keeps the food and fun going.
