“I am not a shopaholic.
I am helping the economy.”
“I wish retail therapy
was covered by my insurance.”
“I could give up shopping,
but I am not a quitter.”
Time to freshen up your look for 2017? Ready for a new piece of art or sculpture to liven things up around the home? Perhaps there’s a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry you’ve been thinking about? How about a great new pair of boots and a sassy new purse?
We’re not doctors, but if it were up to us we’d prescribe a Saugatuck shopping trip and a winter getaway to Wickwood Inn to gift yourself a few days of retail therapy.
Skip the lines. Forget about traffic jams and overpriced parking. A Saugatuck shopping trip comes without any such headaches!
Saugatuck & Douglas are here to pamper. Here are some of our favorite local owned Saugatuck stores.
Good Goods | Sandra and the team at Good Goods have been bringing the best of handmade in America to downtown Saugatuck for over 25 years! You won’t have any trouble finding something special from this stunning collection of jewelry, fine art, furniture, and wearables representing over 150 artists. Todd Reed’s oxidized silver and raw cut diamonds, Eileen Fisher clothing, and a very select group of artisans’ work, in all mediums. Seek out Jessica Bohus and her sterling silver rings that are crafted after one designed by The Vikings. They are as appropriate today as they were then.
Landsharks | Nothing cookie cutter about this place. Yes, Landsharks is a specialty outdoor store with all the great brands you’d expect … but they’re so much more than that. Sally, and her son, David, shop tirelessly so they can introduce us to the best, most exciting and innovative brands. Thanks for keeping us ahead of the times since 1989, Landsharks!
J Petter Galleries | Art & Wine | This 12,000 foot gallery is an unusual find for art enthusiasts, collectors and designers, plus a beautiful destination for wine lovers. Featuring an eclectic collection of fine paintings, sculpture, glass, and more … the galleries are also home to Petter Wine Gallery. Here, you’ll find boutique wines and artful foods, plus a tasting bar! Juli and her expert staff will find just the right pour for you, and we love that they encourage walking around the galleries with that glass of wine in your hand.
Wine Sellers | Mike’s incredible expertise (Level III Sommelier, WOW) and enthusiasm for all that he sells makes Wine Sellers the perfect stop for life’s important pleasures! Mike will help you pick out the perfect bottle (and the cheese and chocolates to go along …) to set the tone and celebrate your escape to Saugatuck.
Earth Echos | When Sean & Cheryl travelled the southwest, they became fascinated by stones. We love that they are still creating bold, custom jewelry AND that they call Saugatuck home. You’re sure to find just the right thing to lift your mood and make a statement in 2017! Be sure and notice their incredible Sterling silver coil necklace that you can hang a pendant of Michigan’s State Gem, Greenstone, on. Greenstone (Chlorastrolite) is found on the beaches of Isle Royale and throughout the Keweenaw Peninsula. The stones look like you’re peering into deep shimmering water.
The Butler Pantry | First opening its doors in 1977, The Butler Pantry is a true culinary experience you don’t want to miss! You can’t miss Mike & John’s passion for cooking and entertaining, and they’ll share their knowledge with a smile, every time.
Farmhouse Deli & Pantry | After catering the best events in town for years, Chef Christine Ferris decided to open a storefront housing all the best local delectables around! We love this full-service deli and all that they do. From the best Evergreen Lane Creamery fresh chevre, to the snappiest triple ginger molasses cookie ever, to the fresh juices and soups made daily from scratch, this place has everything we crave.
Kilwin’s | Dan & Julie’s shop full of sweet goodness is a landmark for locals and tourists alike. In fact, this place is so popular, they added a second store in downtown Saugatuck just to keep up with customer demand. Watch the confections being made in the store window and taste the difference in their handmade chocolates, Mackinac Island-style fudge, and original recipe ice cream.
Chantal Fashion Apparel | We love all 3 of Chantal & Simon’s clothing boutiques in downtown Saugatuck. With the latest in fashions for him & her, we always know just where to go when our wardrobe needs an update!
Upscale Mercantile | Kelly has a great eye and you’ll love her assemblage of unique and funky-chic finds at Upscale Mercantile right in downtown Douglas. Have fun exploring this great mix of mid-century furnishing, decor, lighting, and accessories!
Cabbages &Kings | This delightful store is full of books and gifts for kids of all ages! Every detail adds to the magic: the wonderful puppets interspersed between the books, the ceiling full of the finest mobiles, the hand-painted one-of-a-kind furniture, the wooden building blocks in playful stacks, and the softest stuffed animals on the ready.
Brackett & Company | If you’ve been searching for just the right piece of new decor for you home, look no further. Downtown Douglas is home to Lincoln’s first Bracket & Company store, and it’s known for their collection of unique, quality furnishings. Need help creating the look you’re after? Brackett & Company also offers interior design services!
Uncommon Coffee Roasters | The locals will tell you, Saugatuck runs on whatever is being roasted and handcrafted at Uncommon Coffee. Guy & Steve have been fueling us with caffeine, tea, fresh juices, soups, sandwiches, baked goods (made daily in house), and good tunes since 1994. Guy, Steve … we don’t know what we’d be without you.
Swell Times | Collectibles of all sorts burst from every crevice of this cute shop. Half vintage, half nostalgic memorabilia … 100% fun! Always friendly, this store is the perfect place to find unique gifts and more than a few laughs.
Charlie’s Round The Corner Ice Cream | Greg stocks this place with so many wonderful flavors of Sherman’s ice cream that sampling the latest flavors becomes half the fun. The cheery atmosphere, friendly service, and extra large scoops don’t hurt either!
American Spoon | Based in Michigan since 1982 and still working directly with a dedicated group of Michigan farmers, American Spoon captures and preserves flavors you can’t find anywhere else. Enjoy tasting the preserves, butters, spoon fruit, granola, sauces, and condiments … good luck picking a favorite!
Bright World Candle Company | This shop full of candles, oil lamps, glass accessories, sconces, jewelry, potpourri, and the most amazing smell has been brightening our world since 1987! Shopping at Bright World is certain to bring a little more light into your life.
Saugatuck Traders | Thanks to the classic men’s and women’s sportswear and accessories at Saugatuck Traders, we all look a little bit sharper! Why not let Marsha and her expertise update your casual wardrobe?
The Olive Mill | Here, you can sample the freshest selection of small batch and artisan Extra Virgin Olive Oils and Balsamic Vinegars from all over the world. With so many exciting flavors (Pomegranate or Blackberry Ginger Balsamic Vinegar? Chipotle or Herbes de Provence Extra Virgin Olive Oil?) you’ll have trouble picking just one!
Phillip & Son | We love the selection of affordably priced jewelry, art, and other specialty items … each with a bit of whimsy and a lot of fun! You’ll love the eclectic collection: antique signs of Saugatuck, greeting cards, cocktail napkins, kitchenware, candles, and more.
Saugatuck Antique Pavilion | 24,000 square feet (love the wide aisles and high ceilings!) of antiques featuring over 175 dealers connected to another 24,000 square feet that’s home to the Saugatuck Brewing Company … what’s not to love? A must on your list when visiting Saugatuck.
Alle Rue | for over 15 years Alle Rue has touted designer apparel, glorious hats, men’s sweaters from England, jewelry and truly special items for baby. Awaken your sensuality with Ms. Alle’s French soaps, lotions, bath accoutrements, and more.
Santa Fe Trading Company | Step into the Southwest and products that will comfort your body, mind, and soul. In addition to clothing & accessories, home decor, Native American music, perfumes and soaps, stationery, sterling silver jewelry, and Native American art … Santa Fe Trading has one of the largest selections of Earth and Ariat footwear in the Midwest!
Indian Summer | For locals, going to see Carl & Susan in May for opening day is a seasonal ritual. This sweet store houses the most gorgeous and expertly curated collection of Native American jewelry, pottery, and rugs … and Carl & Susan can tell you a story about each and every piece in the store.
