Preparing food for the people you love always warms the heart. This year, why not keep it simple, and decadent, and loaded with dark chocolate? Here’s a gift, full of love, from our kitchen to yours.

Decadent Chocolate Torte

This incredible torte has been a staple in my repertoire for over thirty years. From the New York (and now Beverly Hills) chocolatier, Kron, it is simple, rich, and always wins raves – everything you want for a little slice of chocolate heaven! Serves 12.

Ingredients:

8 ounces sweet butter, softened
1 cup sugar
8 ounces Kron Chocolate Chips (Ghirardelli Bittersweet Chocolate Chips), melted and cooled
8 large eggs, separated

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Grease and flour a 9-inch springform pan.
2. Using a hand mixer and a large bowl, beat the butter with the sugar until light and lemony. Mix in the chocolate. Beat in the egg yolks, 2 at a time, until combined.
3. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff. Stir ¼ of the whites into the chocolate mixture to lighten it, fold in the remaining egg whites.
4. Scrape ¾ of the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 40-45 minutes. Let stand at room temperature until cool. It will continue to cook as it cools. Spread the remaining batter on top. Refrigerate or freeze until serving time. Serve cold, frozen, or at room temperature with a dollop of slightly sweetened whipped cream.
