A Field Of Flowers In West Michigan Feeds The Bees & Our Souls

Imagine you see a breathtaking field of flowers splashed with color as you drive along a country road in West Michigan. There are few things in this area that bring us more joy than the GORGEOUS field of poppies and wildflowers at Pleasant Hill Farm. Just a few short minutes from Saugatuck, this local treasure started as a way to help feed the bees at the organic blueberry farm. While the flower field has been rotating throughout the farm for the last 20 years, it wasn’t until photos of last year’s plantings popped up on Facebook that the field of flowers came to popular attention.

John Van Voorhees and Joan Donaldson of Pleasant Hill Farm  are happy that more people than ever are enjoying the field of flowers this year. In fact, they mow paths around and into the field so the flowers are more accessible. If you plan on experiencing this sight during your Saugatuck getaway, there are a few things to know.  This year, John and Joan planted the field of flowers along M-89 on either side of their driveway to Pleasant Hill Farm.  The Donaldsons ask that you walk on the mowed areas. And, please do not block traffic on the farm’s drive when you park.

“Cherish the flowers. Remember them when the stresses of life seem overwhelming. Not only do the blossoms feed bees and other pollinators, they refresh our souls.”

~ Joan Donaldson

Families, photographers, wedding parties, artists, and visitors of all ages enjoy this field of flowers near Saugatuck. It seems that good food for the bees is also good food for our souls.

At Wickwood Inn, we are so taken with this field of poppies and wildflowers … we want it with us at all times! And, so we commissioned one of our favorite West Michigan area artists to paint it. We can’t wait for our new poppy painting by local beauty, artist Dawn Stafford. If you haven’t yet seen Dawn’s work, you simply must visit Peachbelt Studio during your next getaway to Wickwood Inn.

“Live quietly in the moment and see the beauty of all before you. The future will take care of itself.”
