The Challenges of Saugatuck Being Chosen as a Best Coastal Community

It’s sometimes bittersweet when Saugatuck gets its due credit. Truth is, we love our little community (population just 964 year-round!) but we are always proud when others recognize our special place.  And so, yes, it’s a thrill that Coastal Living selects us as one of the Best Places to Live on the Coast in 2018. It’s an honor to be among such inspirational places as Chatham, Massachusetts in Cape Cod and Hermosa Beach in California.  But, we do know there’s really no place like home.

“A small town is a place where there’s no place to go where you shouldn’t.”  ~  Burt Bacharach

One of the wonderful things about Saugatuck is how we welcome visitors – with open arms. It’s easy to see why so many people choose us as the perfect getaway from Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee (and also points from throughout the country and world.) Returning to our small-village feel and the shores of Lake Michigan is a perfect vacation moment for many people.  This  shapes long-lasting childhood memories for all who either live here or visit us.

“My plan is to have a theatre in some small town or something and I’ll be manager. I’ll be the crazy old movie guy.”  ~  Quentin Tarantino

But at the same time, we continue to evolve. The arts remain vibrant. There’s a renewed emphasis on food that’s locally sourced and so many restaurants embrace the farm to fork philosophy.  It’s sometimes hard to choose from so many unique, one-of-a kind dining experiences.  Talk to us and we can make recommendations – and often reservations! – so that your experience reflects your expectations.  At Wickwood we celebrate that food is a wonderful component of people’s vacation experiences.  We work with local farmers to bring the freshest ingredients to our guests from the morning’s delicious breakfast to our abundant evening offerings.

This dedication to quality is our way of life at Wickwood – and it echoes throughout Saugatuck.  So we may as well graciously accept the fallout of such high standards.  Which means, being named one of the best coastal places in the United States.
